The littlest part.
I first knew you as the girl I didn’t know,
rocking a gallant blue dress that
perfectly complemented your eyeliner,
attending prom like you expected
no eyes on you but you caught mine anyway.
And I wondered because
the littlest part of me said your face
was familiar but my street-stupidity simply
attributed to all Koreans looking alike
The fact that you’re still in high school
doesn’t exactly make it easier to
converse but I’m glad we do, because
it’s too hard to keep being nice
at Brown and your obesity obviously obscures
all the other girls around (sorry)
But now I’ll watch you proudly graduate
in that oversized blue gown that’s
all too reminiscent of last year and
I keep lying and telling myself that only the
littlest part of me
wants to pretend your last name
is an abbreviation of kimchi
wants to clumsily hug you from behind
wants you to stay just
a bit longer.
