Ornithology.

To you who wish only to be a bird,
Who cease to chirp or sing when I am near,
Abscond from me without a single word.

For me to detain you would be absurd
There should be in your mind no glimpse of fear
To you who wish only to be a bird.

Awaken from your gracious slumber, stirred
By nothing lower than cerulean clear
Abscond from me without a single word.

I might lament for us once I have heard
The trumpet of the sea that bid me steer
To you who wish only to be a bird.

And I, a stranded sailor, have concurred
That I am bound while you shall disappear.
Abscond from me without a single word.

In this deadly ocean I will be burned
But I will show no grief and shed no tear
For you who wish only to be a bird.

Yet you – you, who was by liberty lured,
Will make a runway of the highest pier.
Abscond from me without a single word.

So leave! Be gone! Be wholly undeterred
Since love’s not love unless of being freer.
To you who wish only to be a bird,
Abscond from me without a single word.
